What a free listing can realistically do
A free directory listing will not replace your website or your Google Business Profile. What it can do is put your business in front of people already browsing by category and location, and give search engines another consistent source of information about you. The results depend heavily on how completely you fill it in.
Think of it as shelf space. A half finished entry sits at the back, unseen. A complete entry stands where customers are already looking.
The details that matter most
Business name
Use your real trading name. Do not stuff it with keywords or locations. “Harbour Lane Dental” is a name. “Harbour Lane Dental Best Dentist Brighton Cheap” is a spam signal that will hurt you.
Address and service area
Give the address where you actually operate, and list the areas you serve if you travel to customers. A mobile dog groomer in Norwich should say so clearly.
Phone and email
Use contact details you monitor. A listing that sends enquiries to an unread inbox is worse than no listing at all. If you can, add a mobile number for quick jobs and an office number for everything else.
Website
Link to the most relevant page, not always the homepage. A window cleaner with a dedicated “services in Reading” page should link there.
Opening hours
List real hours, including weekend and bank holiday cover. Search engines and customers both use this field, and wrong hours create frustrated visitors.
Writing a description that earns enquiries
Your description is the sales pitch. Keep it between 150 and 300 words and cover four things: what you do, who you help, where you work, and what makes you easy to hire.
Weak: “We are a friendly local company with years of experience and competitive prices.”
Strong: “We fit and repair gas boilers across York and Selby. Landlord safety certificates are usually booked within 48 hours, and we handle emergency repairs seven days a week.”
Specific beats friendly. Numbers, places and services give a customer a reason to pick up the phone.
Photos and images
- A clear logo on a plain background.
- Two to five photos of real work or your premises.
- One image that shows your team, if you are comfortable with that.
- Reasonable file sizes so the page loads quickly.
Skipping photos makes a listing blend into the background. A few good ones make it memorable.
Categories and tags
Choose the single category that best describes your main service, then add close matches. A cafe belongs under cafes and coffee shops, not under restaurants, bakeries and catering. Precision helps you appear in the right searches.
What to leave out
- Claims you cannot support, such as “number one in the UK”.
- Unrelated keywords that do not describe your work.
- Personal mobile numbers you would rather not publish.
- Text in capitals and rows of exclamation marks.
Filling in the less obvious fields
Once the main fields are done, a few extras pay off. Add your year of founding if the form allows it, because long standing local businesses often win trust quickly. Add payment methods, parking notes and accessibility details if those matter to your customers. A hairdresser with step free access should say so, and a tradesperson who takes card payments should mention it.
If there is a field for social profiles or a booking link, use it. The fewer steps between a customer and a booking, the better. A listing that answers a customer’s likely questions before they call saves everybody time.
A quick pre publish check
Before you submit, read your listing as if you were a customer in a hurry. Can you tell what the business does in five seconds? Is it clear how to get in touch? Is the location obvious? If the answer is yes, publish it.
After that, keep it current. Update the listing when your hours change, when you take on new services, or when you move. Stale information erodes trust.
Add your company today
A complete listing is a small, free asset that keeps working for you. It costs nothing to add and only a few minutes a year to maintain. Put your details on the directory and give UK customers one more way to find you.
