Why reviews do the selling for you
Most people read reviews before they contact a local business, and they trust them almost as much as a personal recommendation. A steady stream of genuine, recent reviews is one of the strongest signals you can send, both to customers and to search engines. The good news is you do not need hundreds. A handful of honest reviews, added to regularly, is enough to stand out.
Ask at the right moment
Timing matters more than technique. Ask when the customer is happiest, usually right after you have delivered something they are pleased with, not weeks later when the glow has faded. If you have just finished a big job, a quick request the same day or the next morning works far better than a bulk email a month later.
Make it one tap
Friction kills response rates. Send a direct link that opens the review box for your Google profile or your main directory listing, so the customer does not have to search for you. If they are in front of you, a QR code on a card or invoice works well. The fewer steps between asking and leaving the review, the more people finish it.
What to say
Keep it short, personal and polite. Thank them for their custom, say that a review helps other people find you, and give the link. For example: “Thanks again for choosing us, it was a pleasure. If you have a minute, a quick review would really help. Here is the link: [link]. No pressure at all.” Warm and human beats a formal template every time.
Never buy or fake reviews
Paid, incentivised or invented reviews break the rules of the major platforms and can get your listing penalised or removed. They also ring false to readers. A smaller set of real reviews will always beat a large set of suspicious ones. If a competitor is cheating, report it rather than joining in.
Reply to every review
Thank people for positive reviews, briefly and genuinely. For negative ones, reply calmly and professionally, acknowledge the problem, and offer to put it right. Future customers read your replies as much as the reviews, and a fair response to criticism can win more trust than a perfect record. Never argue in public; take it offline.
Use reviews in your marketing
A good review is content. Quote a line on your website, share it on social media, or add it to a quote or brochure, with the customer’s permission. Reviews also feed your local search visibility, so a regular flow helps you get found as well as chosen. Keep collecting, keep replying, and keep it honest.
Add a directory profile to the mix
Reviews work best alongside a clear place for customers to find and contact you. A directory listing gives you another credible profile and a simple way to be discovered. Keep your details consistent with your other profiles, and add your business to the directory so new customers can reach you easily.
